Winchester model 100 rifle

Question
Hi Charles, I can buy a Winchester model 100 rifle in caliber .243.  The rifle seems well looked after but as it is very far from me I will not be able to shoot it.  What is the average group size a person can expect from a rifle like this in good order.

Answer
Hello Tinus Botha. First, it is a very fine rifle usually found in .308 Winchester. The .243 Winchester caliber is a bit more scarce. I have never fired one, but a neighbor I once had swore by his. It was the only big game rifle he owned. Used it on Alabama Whitetail deer, feral hogs in Texas and Elk in Northern New Mexico. If it doesn't group less than 1" at 50 yards from a bench, I would be concerned. These simi-automatic rifles were known for the ability to chamber and fire any reasonable high-powered re-loads. It sounds like you have found this rifle on a ' for sale ' or ' auction ' web site. If so, check out the seller's ratings and make sure you have at least a 3-day return option. This way you can make a visual inspection and I suggest take it to a gunsmith to make sure everything works good. I hope this helps answer your question and give's you some useful information, as well.Thank you for asking for me.Charles Gage
