Attempting to determine age of Riverside Firearms 12-gauge single shot shotgun

Question
My father has a shotgun in which we are trying to find out how old it is.  Its serial number is 5468-3, maker is Riverside Firearms.  We are interested in knowing the age of the gun.  We believe it is possibly dated late 1800s but we aren't sure.  If you could help with this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Meagan,

Unfortunately, without more information, it is nearly impossible to narrow down.  Riverside was a firearms manufacturer in Chicopee, MA.  They were purchased by J. Stevens in the early 1900s and Stevens continued to make 'Riverside' shotguns until around 1920.

These were utilitarian shotguns that have overall, not had a great deal of collector interest.  Serial number data is sketchy at best, so that doesn't really tell us very much.

If there was a model number or any other markings on the gun, I might be able to give you a little more info, but with what I have I can only say that the age of the gun predates 1920.

If you could also tell me more about the gun itself?  Single or double barrel?  Bolt action or break open?  If double barrel, does it have one trigger or two?

I just need much more info than you have given me to be more specific...

Sorry I can't be more helpful...
