Open Carry Laws

Question
Hi Doug
I've been getting some conflicted answers about open carry in Arizona.  I'm 19 years old and unsure as to whether or not I can legally open carry a firearm (specifically a handgun).  I'd rather keep myself as safe as possible, but I'm worried about getting stopped with a .357 on my hip.  Your answer is much appreciated.

Answer
Dave,

It is perfectly legal for you to carry a handgun that you have legally acquired anywhere it is legal for you to have a firearm in Arizona.  While you must be 21 to buy a handgun from  a Federally licensed firearms dealer, you can buy a handgun from a private party or receive one as a gift at the age of 18.

You should probably make sure that you are aware of the places where you can legally carry and where you can't.  In Arizona, the only thing a CCW permit buys you over open carry is the ability to conceal.  It doesn't let you carry a firearm any place you couldn't already carry one openly.  You can find more information on where you can legally carry at the following link:

Just be sure that your firearm is PLAINLY visible and not partially concealed, otherwise someone might think you are trying to conceal it and it could cause you trouble.  I'd suggest getting your AZ CCW as soon as you are 21...

Best regards,

Doug
