Winchester Mdl 1912

Question
Dear Sir, I have a Winchester MDL 1912 shotgun that I am having trouble identifying. It is SN 152264, chambered for 12 ga with a 30" barrel.  The information I have dates its manufacture to 1917 which would have been the third year of manufacture for the 12 ga. It seems to be what Winchester called the Heavy Duck but it also seems to be a tricked out version. The fore stock is both slotted and checked, the stock is a very fine burled walnut (not the plain light walnut).  The stock is the pistol grip type and is checked on both sides in a very nice patern. The rib on the barrel is solid and milled along the top edge. Also on the underside of the stock is a gold inlay in the shape of a shield with the name "HION A DODGE" engraved in it; The name HION could be HILIN with the L and I overlaping slightly. This inlay appears to be original to the gun as the finish on the stock covers it. Could this gun be a some type of special order from the factory? Its condition is Excellent, the blueing is perfect all markings are sharp and clear, the finish on the wood has 2 small marks but is otherwise perfect, the only drawback is that I am pretty sure it has an aftermarket butpad, the original may be underneath but I dare not take it apart to find out. This was my grandfather's gun, and has been mine now for the last 15 years or so, we know it has been in the family for at least 60 yrs.  I would appreciate knowing a value of the gun but am more interested in finding out exactly what this gun is. Thank you for your time,
Kevin

Answer
Hi,
I would contact the Cody Firearms Museum.
They have Winchester records pre 1973.

The wood could be aftermarket.
If its a Heavy Duck in excellent to good condition
Its worth $600 ti $750.

It also could be a Pigeon Grade with are worth $1500 to $2100

I would also have an expirenced local gunsmith appraise it.
