Correct ammo for 10 mm Glock to shoot bear

Question
We recently moved to Idaho, where we are in a wooded area with bear.  We asked our local gun shop what kind of gun would work best for a bear breaking into the house (close-up shooting), and they recommended a 10 mm Glock.  As for ammo, I was told to get high velocity for maximum penetration, and they recommended Speers or Hornady.  But when I went to buy ammo, all they had was Remington.  Is there that much of a difference, and what kind of ammo would you recommend?

Thank you.

Cheryl

Answer
He was probably recommending a controlled-expansion bullet.  Speers and Hornady are some preferred manufacturers of bullets that are used by people who load their own cartridges.  Those bullets are often not available in local gun stores in factory-loaded cartridges.  Yes, the controlled-expansion bullets in some of the Remington cartridges would be OK.  They will have a partail metal jacket and have some small marks along the side of the bullet that help to guide the bullet to expand in a more-controlled way.

But I would recommend one of the S&W model 500 guns if you want a large a handgun.  Or you could use a 12 ga shotgun with large buckshot.

Hope this helps!

Dave
