Rifle identity

Question
I have inherited a group of collectable guns from my dad. On one of the guns it is written "Herrmann". There is also a Bayonet that attaches. I have looked through may gun books, but cannot identify the gun. I have searched for Herrmann on the internet, but have come up empty. Can you help? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ivy.

I couldn't find any reference to a "Herrmann" rifle when searching by brand name or model name.  I also checked the Blue Book of Firearms at the following link and it doesn't seem to contain any such manufacturer:

https://store.bluebookinc.com/download/Manufacturer.aspx?product=GUN&id=H

The Blue Book is the most comprehensive reference that I am aware of so it seems likely that the name "Herrmann" was the name of the importer, gunsmith, or owner at one point in time.

Most firearms have other markings which will identify the exact manufacturer and model info.  Sometimes these markings are numbers, initials, foreign words, or just symbols.  They can be hidden underneath accessories like the stock, grip panels, scope, etc.  On older firearms the original markings may have been sanded off or covered with rust or filled in during refinishing.

The best way to identify the rifle would be to take it to a local gunsmith or a larger gun store which sells a lot of rifles.  You can also go to a local gun club or shooting range and will likely run into someone that is anxious to help.

Keep in mind that the advice you receive will most likely be biased if they are interested in buying your rifles, so once you know the manufacturer and model then you can use the Blue Book link above to check on the history of the firearm and determine current value.

Hope this helps.

Bob
