.303 ammo

Question
I have a Winchester that I was told was a .303, however when I put in some .303 British ammo it would not fit.  Is there a difference in British ammo than regular? Or what else could be the problem?
Thanks

Answer
Courtni,

Without personally being able to inspect the firearm in question I can only speculate.

I would suggest that you have a qualified gunsmith inspect the firearm and advise you as to its caliber and if it is safe to shoot.

If they do not find any markings to aid them, they can "slug" the barrel to determine the caliber. There are just too many variables to try to guess at what may be wrong.

I'm not sure who told you that it is a Win. .303 but I find that unlikely. There should be some barrel/receiver markings on the gun somewhere as to caliber (?) My guess is that it is not a .303.

In short I think that you are merely trying to fit a cartridge into the chamber that is not of the proper dimensions.

An ispection of the ammo and firearm would help clear that up

Thanks for the question.
