16 Gauge Pump Western Field Browning

Question
I just inherited a my Dad's old 16 gauge, I remember him using it when I was a boy. I am not sure how he got the gun.  It has on the receiver Western Field Browning, Montgomery Ward and Company.  It is a Model 30 and the serial number is 3044 C.  It is in good working condition. Can you tell me how old it is and can I get a part list?  It is a full choke, would it be possible to install new chokes?  Would that devalue the gun?  Thanks
John

Answer
John,

I believe that your M30 is actually a trade name (store brand)gun made by Savage/Stevens for the Montgomery Ward Co. and is equivalent to a Savage model 520.

The 520 was manufactured between 1912 and 1932 with a total production of about 190,000.

In "good" condition it could have a retail value of up to $150.

You probably could get it modified to accept interchangeable chokes depending upon how thick the barrel steel (IE.thin wall) is. I personally think that the cost of doing so (assuming that it can be done) vs the value of the gun would not make it worth spending the money on however, that is your call.

Thanks for the question John.
