Winchester Model 1897 12 Gauge: Manufacturing Date & History
Question
Found my dads shotgun in attic..was wondering when it was made. Found what appears to be a serial number on receiver..596085. model 1897 12 ga. in really good shape.
Answer
Hi Steve,
The M-1897 that you have was manufactured in 1916 and replaced the M-1893 with several improvements to same.
It had a stronger frame, lengthened chamber (to 2.75")and a longer stock. The gun was manufactured for 60 years and over one million were sold.
There were eight different versions made of the M-1897. My guess is (and I'll assume) that you have the "Standard" gun. In which case your shotgun in "good" condition is retailing for about $450 - $550.
I hope this helps and thanks for the question.
