Choosing Your First Handgun: Beretta 92FS vs. Glock & .45 vs. 9mm

Question
I recently got a permit to purchase my first handgun.  Just something to target shoot.  I've thought about Glocks or a 1911 style, but think I'd prefer a Beretta 92FS.  I like everything about the Glocks, except for not having a conventional safety.
My first question is about a good chambering to start with.  My aim is still bad with 9mm, since I don't have much experience yet.  Thought about a 45, but the grip would too big, and probably couldn't handle the recoil well.  What are your thoughts on a good chamber to start with for a beginner just getting used to shooting?
Also, when looking at used handguns, what things should I look for in terms of excessive wear?  I've seen slight rust on some, don't care so much how it looks, mostly concerned with things that could make a difference with reliability, and overall lifespan of the gun.

Thanks a lot!

Answer
I started out with a Ruger Mark II .22LR and an Auto Ordnance .45ACP 1911.  I wanted to learn to shoot in NRA bullseye competitions, and you need both a rimfire and a centerfire gun. Those guns worked out great for me. I still shoot them often, after 20 years.

Some people worry about recoil from a .45, but it's nothing special if you are using a full-sized gun.  Also, if you reload, you can load light for target shooting.

Lots of different grips are available for 1911s. So, that's what I would recommend. If you buy a gun with steel frame and slide, you're not going to see any real wear unless it was fired more than 20,000 times (that would be from a real competitor who shoots often). If you get an aluminum slide, look for wear on the inside rails.  Don't buy a Llama.

Hope this helps!
