Walther I.D.

Question
Hi,
My dad has a Walther handgun that looks like it is either a PP or a PPK. He always refers to it as his "PPK", but I don't think this is correct. The slide is engraved with the following:

(Walther Logo) Carl Walther Waffenbrik Ulm/Do
              Modell PP Cal 7.65mm

On the reverse side in the ejection port it has: b6 (eagle over n logo) and under the port there is the serial number. There is also another number engraved vertically between the grips and the trigger.

The "PP" on the one side is what made me question its model. Can you give me some insight as to what this gun might be?

Answer
Jack,

Well, if it says PP (Police Pistol) on the slide, chances are better than not it is a PP and not a PPK (Police Pistol Kurtz, Kurtz being German for "short"). The PPK was banned from importation into the US with the Gun Control Act of 1968, making them a bit tougher to come by. The easiest way to tell for sure would be to measure the barrel and/or the overall length.

The PP has a barrel length of 3.86 inches, or 98mm and an overall length of 6.7 inches or 170mm.

The PPK has a barrel length of 3.2 inches, or 83mm and an overall length of 6.1 inches, or 100mm.

Hopefully I've been of some help, if you've any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Kyle
