Question
Hello,
I am 31 and just bought a new pair of Rock Sonic Pink Flames with ABEC 5 bearings.  I haven't skated since I was about 14 years old but loved it back then and recently went a few months back to a rink with friends and decided this would be a great way to get back into shape without being bored with exercise.  I did spend some money on them because I want to skate outdoors.  I have taken the skates out for one session but my balance was not as good as it used to be.  Will this develop with practice?  And then my ankles hurt a little on the inside, is this because of muscle weakness, and should this get better with time?  Or should I possibly go see a podiatrist?  Thanks for answering my questions!

Rubett

Answer
Hi Rubett,
Congratulations on returning to skating.  It's a wonderful sport all year long and great exercise.

As for your balance?  Yes, it will come back.  When you don't skate for that many years, things change!  But give it a little time and you'll be back to your ole self again.

Your ankles hurting is normal.  Those are muscles you haven't used for many years but they will strengthen and feel fine.

If after skating for a month or more and they still bother you, you may need a skate boot with a better arch support and a higher boot for ankle support.  But give it a fair trial period.

I don't think you need to see a podiatrist unless you're  prone to foot problems.  Most likely the muscles just need to be conditioned.

Have fun and be safe.  If after a reasonable time you find your skating is not getting as comfortable as you would like it to, go take a few lessons at your local roller rink.  They can give you tips on balance and various maneuvers.

If I can help with anything else, feel free to write again.
