skating problem

Question
I have a problem with my left ankle turning outside and inside while skating and standing. My right foot seem to be stable but my left seem to be given me problems. I thought it was the skates. So I took them back and got a new pair. Still doing the same thing. What can i do to correct this problem?

Answer
Hi,
I think my first question is if you're on roller skates or roller blades?

If it's roller skates with a boot that is higher than your ankle you may need to see an orthopedic doctor and have him make a custom insert for your skates.  You may have one weak ankle?

If you have roller blades it could be the same thing as I mentioned above or your left foot is just not your favorite or strongest foot.

Sometimes with roller blades people don't bring their feet close enough together and the ankles turn in.  If this is the case, after each push, try to bring your feet together as close as possible before taking another push.  With roller blades you don't have to worry about tripping yourself by touching your skates together.

It's hard to answer not knowing what you are skating on but my guess is roller blades?

When standing, try to keep your feet close together and straight up on the wheels.

When skating, after each push, bring the pushing foot back as close as possible to the other skate focusing on keeping the wheels straight up.  Then take another push.

Always bring the skates back under your hips, if the feet are to far apart it causes the ankles to turn in.

Ankles turning in is very common for roller blades.  Try to correct this now because it can cause damage to your ankles later on.

If this is not the case you may need to visit the doctor and have a support made.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know.  I hope this helps a little bit
