Ski Purchase

Question

I live out east and I have the option to by the Volkl Bridge 2010 Skis (177cm)
with bindings for $400.  (I don't know the brand of Binding)

I was wondering if this would be a good deal and if that would be the right
ski for me.  My concern is that the ski will not be able to handle the
occasional ice that pops up in the east every once in a while, however I have
found mixed reviews that the ski can and can't handle the ice.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hey John,

As for the deal, if the skis are in good to great condition (ie; no base gouges, minimal base scratches, minimal top scratches, binding in good working order), then $400 would be a good deal. They retail right now for about $150 more than that without bindings.

My best advice would be to ask the seller if you could have them checked over at a reputable shop. Also ensure that the bindings are on the current indemnification list. If they are on the list, then they are still covered by the manufacturer and shops will work on them. If they are not on the list, you are on your own if something happens to you due to binding failure. Here is a link to the list - http://www.nssra.com/2001/nssra/index.asp?centre=article&recno=2651

As for performing on ice, being an all mountain/park ski, they may not grip quite as good as say a race ski but keep the edges sharp and you should be okay. A good rule of thumb is resharpen the edges after every two or three icy days of skiing. Otherwise, sharpen as needed.

Hope this helps.
Keep on skiing,
