storing snowboards

Question
don't know if you know much about snowboards, but I just got one and I have a very small amount of space in my house.  is it ok to store my snowboard (all summer) standing upright on its back end leaning against the wall?  or do you have any better ideas?

Answer
Hi 'A' & thanks for the question.

Its best to store snowboards flat if you can.
Is there room under your bed to slide it?
Or can you mount a bracket on the wall in your house [bedroom, spare room, basement] or garage?
Most people put angle the bracket back so it doesnt jut out as far and reduces risk of it sliding off. Line up the brackets so they sit about a foot from the ends of your board. Bit like storing wakeboards.

Store your board in a bag if possible to help prevent rust - especially if you live within 50k of the coast. Rust on edges will need to be removed before you go out next season and can maen the loss of upto if not more than a 1mm of your edges - and that is alot. Can also make edges uneven - meaning you will lose more than a 1mm.

Leaning your board up against the wall is ok if you remember to turn it regularly [weekly so you dont forget maybe]. Stored on one end will cause that end to bend more making your board unflat next season. But again - if you live near the coast protect your edges [and the wall for that matter].

Also before you store it - put a summer wax on it. This will stop your board from drying out and be liberal enough to coat the edges if you can. A summer wax is just a thicker coat of wax left on the board till nexty season [use cheap wax for it].

To wax your board:
NEED old iron with NO water in it, stick of wax, clean board base & put some newspaper under it to catch the drips.

Heat up the iron, melt the wax carefully against the iron dripping it onto the board. Apply quite a bit, then using the iron [on a med setting only] iron the wax to smooth it out over the board. Touch the board - quickly & carefully- because you dont want to 'cook' the board as that will damage the base beyond repair. The base should only get to warm, never hot. The heat helps the wax get into the base.
Give it about 30mins to dry then you can store the board. Put the leftover wax in a plasitc bag or container to keep it clean.
This wax will need to be scraped back before you ride next. Get a scraper from your ski shop, using long smooth strokes, remove the wax intil the board feels smooth - but dont crape it ALL off or you'll hace to start again.  You can go and talk to your local board/ski shop, quite often they will help you to learn how to if you ask for some pointers.

Hope this helps, if you need any more info, just ask.
