extreme sports facilities

Question
hello..
I'm an architecture student in the Philippines and our new design problem is a "Proposed Extreme Sports Park". I've already researched about x-games and skateboarding facilities. Roller skating is one of the game requirements. i just want to ask how do you determine the size or dimensions of a rink?

i really hope you can help me out.
Thank you very much..

Answer
Hi Jo,
The size of a rink is determined by what you want to use it for.  If it's just for the general public to skate in for fun, it doesn't have to be as large as a rink floor that's used for competition.  The average size rink floor in my area is 80' x 175'.  This is a good size floor that can be used for both the public and competition.

We also have rink floors that are as large at 100' x 200'.  It just depends on how much room you have available and what you want to use it for.

The dimensions I gave you are for just the skating surface.  You will also need to allow extra room around the skating surface for things like washrooms, an snack bar so people can get something to eat and drink (which could be optional since you may already have this in a main area of your sports park) It would be to your benefit to have food and beverages right in the roller rink area so people don't have to take their skates off and leave to get something to eat or drink.

You will also need to allow room for benches so people have somewhere to put their skates on plus a separate room/area where they can rent the roller skates.  Near the entrance you will probably want a ticket office where people pay admission to get in and pay for rental skates.

Other than that, you would need storage room for cleaning items like mops, a floor scrubber etc.   If you plan on serving food and soft drinks you will need a kitchen area to prepare the food such as hot dogs, hamburgers etc.

Most rinks here also have an area where they can host birthday parties.  Which means either separate rooms or extra tables to hold the parties at.

That just about covers what's usually in a roller rink.  The dimensions are up to the individual depending on how large they want these extra areas and how much money they are willing to spend.

If I can be of further help, please feel free to write again.
