Roller Skates for Post-Bunionectomy & Flat Feet: A Guide for Active Adults

Question
I am in my mid fifties, very active, have flat feet, and 6 months post-op for a bunionectomy.  I don't think in line skates would work for me due weak ankles and no arch, not to mention speed.  What is your thought on outdoor roller skates.  I use to skate for years when I was young at an indoor roller rink. I loved it.  Looking at the Riedell skates and I am interested.  I will be moving to Long Island by the summer.  Are roller skates more appropriate for me than inline?  thanks

Answer
Kathy,
Given your history, as you have stated here & the fact that you used to skate in quads & loved it, I agree that quads would be the right choice for you. The fit would most likely be more forgiving for you than inlines & the balance easier for you at this age.
As a Riedell dealer & an avid skater myself, I would recommend the Riedell 297 boot for one with your particular foot issues & for your comfort - the 297 being made specifically for rollerskating (as opposed to ice/roller) & it being the easiest boot to break in - supportive yet malleable. The 297 is a somewhat pricey but buttery feeling boot!!
Unless you have a narrow foot, with your history of a bunionectomy, I'd recommend the black boot as opposed to the white - it will give you just a little more room in the width.
If you want more info on platess, wheels & bearings you can call me at 212 777-3232 & I'll be glad to discuss your optiions with you as well as where to find some good skating in the NY area. I Hope this will help you to make your decision.
