thick ankles/calves

Question
Hi,

I want to get into roller blading but I have thick ankles/calves and am overweight. I like roller blading but it starts to hurt. I think it might be the pressure on my ankles from a tight boot but I dont know. I want to roller blade but if thats the reason I think I need new skates and if its not the reason then I dont know what to do. Where could I find roller blades that would fit right? Please help. Thanks.

Leah

Answer
Leah,
I have encountered this problem with a few of my students. The solution may be to buy a low cut boot like the Roller Blade RB 8. You need to shop around a bit to find a wide boot & as I suggested if you can use a lower cut model you may well avoid that pressure on the ankles.
One of my students who encountered this problem switched from inlines to quads & I fitted her for a wide low cut inexpensive skate boot. We used a cheaper boot because it was suede & not heavily padded & therefore not stiff & restrictive. She is very happy with the softer lower profile boot.
Hope you find something to give you comfort so that you can continue to enjoy this gratifying sport.
