A beginner wondering what to do next..

Question
I'm a total beginner.. but very enthused to get into windsurfing. Just took my first two windsurfing lessons and really liked it! I did fall in several times but was able to get up, sail around and do some basic tacks and figure out a basic jibe or two.

I really would like your opinion on what to do next. I do have 10 hours of practice time at the place I took these lessons at. What should I work on to make the best use of this time?? Then what after that? I also now have some used older equipment and it's in great condition but I think its geared for an intermediate level. And am having a hard time figuring out exactly how to rig it right. Should I look at trying to make this equipment work?? (I can send you details on what I have if that helps)

I'm sorry for these basic questions.. again I am new to this whole thing and don't know anyone who windsurfs, but am very enthused to get into the sport. Just looking for some guidance on where best to go from here. Thanks so much for all the time you put into answering questions on here!!

Answer
Hey Dave,

During your practice time, be sure to work on the basics that you have already learned. Don't worry too much about trying to advance, just get the basic tacks and jibes down. Work on sail and body position to get your balance dialed in. That way when you switch to your own gear, it will make things a bit easier as you will have certain balance memory which will help with a more difficult board.

As for rigging, go to Ezzy.com and check out his rigging video. It is geared toward his sails but all the basics of rigging are the same. Also, check out windsurfingmag.com in the 'how to' section. There are great tips for all levels but start with the beginner tips and work your way through. Lots of good info to read up on when you aren't sailing. There are also some good instructional videos available. The best set are by Peter Hart. Just Google him and you will find plenty of places to purchase. It's almost like getting a lesson but you get to keep getting the lesson as many times as you want to watch. Videos are very helpful for learning new things. And for getting to know someone who windsurfs, there will almost always be someone around who sails and eventually you will run into them at your local launch spot. Just be yourself and friendly and soon you will know someone who sails.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
