mistral base

Question
Hi,  I have an old mistral superlight and need a mast base for it.  If and when I find or fabricate one, will I also need to purchase an extension to fit the base?
Thanks,  Mike O.

Answer
Hey Mike,

Does your superlight have the old style mast base system that is just two holes in the board? The base would have a plastic dowel type bottom that is flat on two sides and you slide the base in and turn it until the pin locks. If you have this style, the only resource I know that may have one would be Big Winds in the Gorge. You can call or email them via www.bigwinds.com

If your board has the newer sliding mast track, any standard type screw on base will work. There would be two holes in the slider, one threaded and one that would take a pin. The threaded hole is compatible with all standard mast bases. Check out Chinooksailing.com for bases and extensions.

Once you get something that will work, you will only need an extension if your mast is too short for the sail you are trying to rig. The standard sails that came with a superlight did not need an extension as the mast was the correct length. If you are going to be using different size sails, then you will need an extension. Depending upon the top of your mast base, you may or may not have to change that out to fit newer extensions. Be sure to check out Chinook for pics and parts for mast bases and extensions.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
