Old vs new

Question
I keep hearing about the differences between "old-school" and new boards.  I'm an intermediate with average skills.  How much difference would I expect to find between a late '80's 120 liter mistral shredder and a 2009 freeride of similar bouyancy - say a mistral screamer?  I guess I am wondering just how significant the difference will be.  Thanks!!

Answer
Hey Anawan,

Some of the differences will be noticed based on your experience level. The newer freeride boards are much more user friendly, can handle a wider variety of sails, jibe easier, and are more versatile for tricks.

The old school board may be a bit faster as the shredders and screamers of old were more of a slalom design. It may also handle higher winds a bit better due to the narrower shape.

All said, most sailors prefer the newer freeride boards over the older boards.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
