pedometer setting

Question
My best friend gave me a new pedometer and there are two settings and I don't understand what they represent.  I hardly ever use pedometers and I barely have any experience with them, but now I am deciding to use the one I have.  The first setting has a number on the left ranging from 30 to 120 with an L icon on the right.  The second setting has  numbers ranging from 30 to 150 with an upside down, reversed L icon, like a backwards 7.  I don't have a clue what these icons represent.  I would like to know what these icons represent so I can set it as accurately as possible.  I have no idea where my friend got this from, but is has a Azilect medication advertisement on it.  Otherwise, I don't know what brand the pedometer is.  There is one very good thing about it, I tested it out and it knows very well when I make a step and reads the number of steps I make very accurately.  I am very happy with it :)

Answer
Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to set the calibration on the pedometer from the description you gave. However, if you like it, and it counts your strides accurately, you can do a manual calibration. Manual calibration is as accurate as the device calibration but it takes a little more time.

You will have to find an accurately measured course of about a mile -- four laps in lane 2 on a 400 meter track will do. Set the pedometer to zero, then walk the mile at your normal walking pace. The count you get is your number of steps per mile. Now you can walk anywhere with your pedometer, and afterwards, divide your total pedometer count by the per mile value from your calibration. This will give you the distance you walked in miles.

One complication is if you do some of your walking workouts at different speeds. You may want to do a separate manual calibration while walking at different speeds -- say a speed a lot slower than your normal and another a lot faster than you usually go. Then use the appropriate per mile calibration to find your mileage when you workout at different speeds.
