What could be the reason that my lower back hurts when walking long distances?  Thanks.

Some ideas might include incorrect posture, using the wrong shoes, using worn out shoes, or just pre-existing back problems or leg-length discrepancies.

Your posture needs to be very upright and you should guard against leaning forward when you get fatigued.

Go to a running specialty store and be fitted for the right shoes for your foot mechanics. Then be sure to replace them every 400-500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. I don't believe in using specialized walking shoes -- running shoes are fine for walkers.

You might consider going to a good chiropractor to check for spinal alignment problems that he/she can help you correct or offset. He/she can also identify differences in leg length. If there are more serious medical problems involved, a competent chiropractor can refer you to a good MD.
