How do I pop the wheels off my bike?

2016/7/16 9:29:58

Question
I have a Jamis Durango that I'm trying to take apart to fit in the back of my car trunk. I see the levers and the screw part so I was able to unscrew those parts, but now the brakes are in the way. What do I do now? Thanks!

Answer
The Durango has disc brakes. They are not in the way! The frount wheel is accually easier to remove than one with caliper brakes.

The lever and screw part is called a quick release. The cutouts, the notches the quick release rest in, have a low ring around it. This is to prevent the wheel from falling off if the lever is released accidently. Just releasing the lever will not let you remove the wheel. It must also be backed off, unscrewed, a few turns. Move the lever to its' open position and back off lever or the nut on the other side 3 or 4 turns, just one of them, not both.

With disc brakes the wheel will drop off. If if doesn't, loosten the adjuster wheel. This is a "star" shaped nut or wheel that is at the end of the brake lever on the handle bars. When you put the wheel back on, put the adjuster back where it was.
Do not - I repeat - do not squeeze the brake lever with the wheel removed. It will cause the caliper piston to move out of position.

I don't like doing web searches but I will point you to this one
