1987 KMV 1700 Boat Inspection Checklist: A New Owner's Guide
Question
I have not previously owned a boat and am looking at a 1987 kmv 1700. I like the idea of a hardtop but I am not sure what type of things to look for when viewing and test driving the boat. Would you be able to give me some pointers. The boat looks in good shape from pictures and is in my price range.
Thank you
Lorry
Answer
Dear Lorry,
Most boat problems relate to the motor. If it starts easily and runs smoothly you are half way there. The transom, which holds the motor some times has some damage so seeing if there are any cracks along the vertical ends of the motor mounting surface could be an issue as they are hard to repair well. The only other problem is usually along the bottom of the V bow where it has been run up on rocks or sand. Check for ware or repair. Often looking at the inside of the hull will show unfinished gel coat were repairs have been made. If done well the are no problem but can be indications for abuse.
Best of luck,
