1974 Evinrude Lower Unit Repair: Assessing Damage & Solutions
Question
I just bought a 1974 VIP Skiboat with a 85 HP Eveinrude Motor. The lower unit had a crack were it looks like a bearing might have blown. I've covered the crack with JB weld but I'm not sure how long it will hold and how to keep water out..Any Advice?
Answer
Hello Tyler...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question. JB Weld will not do the job.
A fractured lower unit at the gear hub which is bullet-shaped, suggests the likelihood water may have contaminated the gears, bearings, and prop shaft. Best you dismantle and see what may be salvageable. Otherwise, seek and install a rebuilt lower unit.
