outdrive

Question
Hey Ron, I did what you told me to do about the revving problem with the 150 and it worked so if you dont mind I'd like to pick your brain a little more. I just bought a 94 crownline with a mercruiser outdrive and its been sitting for 2 years. The motor runs alright but before I take it out, I wanted to ask what I should do or check on the outdrive before I go out? Thanks -Corey

Answer
Hi Corey...I'm pleased you were able to resolve the former problem. Sorry for the delay in responding, but I've been extremely busy.

Any boat & mtr. that's been sitting for 2 yrs. should be checked out thoroughly, particularly if it was stored outside and protected from the elements, including freezing temperatures.

Make sure you check engine's spark plugs, oil colour and level, and do a compression test. While stored, was the fuel tank fuel or almost empty. If the latter applies, there's various chemicals you can introduce to eliminate water/condensation sitting on top of the gas, then add fresh fuel. Start the engine and let it run for at least 15-20 minutes to see whether it overheats.

Make certain the steering and throttle control mechanisms are functioning smoothly, and that the oil in the lower unit of the outdrive is fresh and not milky. Also check the prop and ensure it is properly secured to the prop shaft. If you see an oil slick while the boat remains stationary, you can bet the prop seal requires replacement. Inspect the gear hub for any cracks and that the skeg and prop are in good repair (not bent or broken).

While on a trailer or in a sling, insert the boat's drain plug securely, then partially fill the bilge with water. Then check the bottom of the boat for leaks. Also run the bilge pump to ensure it is functioning properly, including the bilge blower (hose not clogged with a squirrel nest), and that the fresh air vent hose for the bilge is also clear, including the air vent for the fuel tank (clogged by spider nest).

Take it for a test drive to be satisfied everything works well and within your expectations.

Good Luck & Safe Boating
Ron
