Cabin stuck in the 70s

Question
Hi Ron,
I have a 1976 Cal-Jensen 27' sailboat.  The outside and topside are in good shape but the cabin is not.  I have dry-rot and decayed wood in the galley area.  I also have a padded yellow ceiling and walls.  I am considering a complete tear-out and re-do.  What I am looking for is reference books on the proper way to do it myself without compromising the structure or safety of the boat.  Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Answer
Hi Tom...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

There are numerous texts in the library to assist you to with renos, or you could consult a reliable marine repair facility or a qualified and trusted marine surveyor to give you guidance. The latter might be a good start, particularly if they have a moisture meter to determine the extent of moisture in the hull's laminates (osmosis) as well as in the structural wood framework. In all likelihood, the problem is not confined just to the galley area, and you'll need to explore and determine the cause of dry rot in order to remedy it once and for all. And, don't forget, the problem may have been a result of improper storage.

Remember, when the hull was constructed, the second process of manufacturing involved lowering the upper decking into place, and sealing the hull/deck joint properly, which is where most leaks occur. Close inspection may reveal the joint requires recaulking.

Removing any interior liner from the ceiling or walls, etc., will expose the figreglass canopy and is replaceable with variety of fabrics that are conducive with marine applications. You may be biting off more than you can chew, so to speak, so get a professional assessment first, before you proceed and get in over your head financially.

Safe Boating
