2000 Mercury 75 hp have to choke to keep running

2016/7/15 18:29:29

Question
I have a 2000 Mercury 75hp 2 stroke motor on my pontoon boat that will start fairly easily, but wont stay running, I can choke it for 1 or 2 seconds and it will pick back up and will stall again if I stop, what could be the cause. I replaced plugs, ran seafoam threw it and still the same situation...Help....

Answer
Hi Steve...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

I'm not a mechanical technician, but it sounds like a carb problem, and maybe the diaghram is malfunctioning or did that model have reeds? Whatever the case may be, there's difficulty with the flow of fuel, so I recommend starting at the fuel tank and be sure the air line isn't clogged with cow webs, etc. which restricts the ambient air pressure in the tank; check the fuel pump and filter for obstructions; make certain all fuel line connections are good and tight and also free of obstructions; then check the air intake. It could also be you have a defective choke. If all else fails, consult a qualified and reliable marine mechanic.
