buying a boat

2016/7/16 9:27:27

Question
Hi, hopefully you can offer some advice on a purchase that i am tempted with. I have had several small speedboats in the past in the UK, and have now emigrated to Perth, Western Australia, where i wish to get something bigger. My eye has been caught by a Bombardier celebrity 7m sportscruiser with a 7.4ltr chev mercruiser. I have a reasonable knowledge of old cars (MG's) but not really boats. Is there anything specifically that i should be looking for or keeping an eye out for when buying  a boat such as this.  Would appreciate your comments
Regards
Mike

Answer
Hi Mike

Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

When contemplating the purchase of a boat, I recommend you engage an experienced, qualified and reputable marine surveyor to examine the vessel from stem to gudgeon (front to rear), including electricals & instruments for functionality or defect. They will 'sound' the hull to determine any defects or abnormalities or prior repairs. Their value is worth the price of peace of mind!

Few surveyors are capable of inspecting engines & generators to determine compression, etc., therefore, I recommend you consult a qualified marine mechanic to undertake such inspection. Again, the cost involved may save you hundreds or thousands of dollars, and provide a comfort level whereby you know that the entire craft is in A-1 shape and well worth the value.

Remember Mike, you're considering a substantial  investment, and when you're not well versed in the area of boats and marine engines, etc., it's best to rely upon  professionals who are qualified to provide proper guidance and advice. In the final analysis, you get what you pay for.
