bad trim/tilt motor??

2016/7/15 18:33:37

Question
I have a 1986 regal medallion 140 hp i/o mercruiser. the problem is the tilt/trim is not working properly.  The tilt/trim will not move up or down. When you push the button either way it just clicks. i previously asked a question about this to another one of the experts and he stated that I should check to make sure there is power going to all of the wires (which I did), and when i did so it worked for a few minutes.  When I then took the boat back out on the water it stopped working again.  I messed around with the wires again, but could not get the boat to start working again.  Any suggestions?? I have no idea what I am doing as far as boats are concerned so if you could please explain in detail so that I can try to figure out whats going on!!!   Thank you for your time and knowledge, Jessica

Answer
Hi Jessica...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

There's a number of possibilities. There could be a short in the wiring or a poor electrical connection(s). The hydraulic pistons/rams could be bent or the seals could have failed and the system now lacks sufficient oil. Also, check to see if there are any obstructions which could prevent the trim/tilt from operating properly.

In view of your lack of knowlege/experience, why not save yourself a lot of time and expense and choose a reliable/qualified marine mechanic to do the trouble-shooting?
