yamaha 150 4-stroke making oil

2016/7/15 18:33:42

Question
I have a Sailfish 218 with a yamaha 150 4-stroke engine on it. I recently checked the oil level and it was above the high mark gauge on the stick so I took the boat in to be serviced. I was told that it was making oil. I was also told that everything was fine and I had nothing to worry about. I obviously have concerns about this because my warranty on the engine expires next February. What causes the engine to make oil? I was told that this could happen if water or gas was seeping around the rings. If this is true, should this be repaired now? I don't feel really comfortable with this problem even though the boat runs great. I have checked the oil each time I return from a fishing trip and more oil is present. What should I do?

Answer
Hi Virgil...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

I'm not a mechanic, but I have never heard of any engine "making oil". The oil level in an engine can diminish through evapouration, or leakage via a seal or gasket or a fracture. Prior to your next voyage, check the oil while the engine is cold, then check it again when you reach your destination and record the readings on the dip stick. Keep doing this for about 3-4 outings, then compare the readings. It is possible too much oil was introduced initially, which can create a problem if the level is very excessive. In the event the oil level keeps rising when cold and hot, best you select an alternative, reliable and professional Yamaha marine mechanic to troubleshoot the problem. You can also go online to Yamaha and get answers direct.
