What is the biggest motor I can put on my pontoon boat

Question
Hello. I have a 24 ft. Harris flote bote 240. I believe it's a 1985. Currently I'm running a 1975 Johnson 40hp motor on the back only because that is what was on it when I bought it. It's definitely under powered. At full throttle it won't even read on the speed odometer. I can't find a plate on the boat anywhere that would tell me what the recommended motor size would be. Can you tell me your best suggestion. Thanks, Ron

Answer
Hi Ron...thanks for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question.

I'm not familiar with the design or manufacturer of your vessel...is it equipped with pontoons? Regardless,a 40hp unit just won't do the job. In the absence of a "Capacity Plate" from the Coast Guard and/or mfr., I don't think you'll have a problem if you go with a 90 to 100+ engine.
