Lower Unit Gear Oil

Question
How do I add gear oil to lower unit ?

Answer
Hi Gary - thanks for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

This may sound a little ridiculous, but I suggest you obtain an owner's manual for your specific engine for future reference.

Most outboard motors have 2 silver-headed screws, one below the cavitation plate and one near the bullet-designed gear housing. Remove the upper one first, then the lower one. Allow old oil to drain into a container, and dispose at an automotive or marine service depot. You'll require a special pump (inexpensive) to introduce the new oil into the bottom of the gear housing. When it spills out of the top hole, the system is properly filled. Quickly replace the lower screw, then the upper screw, and you're done! Just that easy.

Keep in mind, if the old oil is grey or milky, it's an indication water leaked into the housing, most likely through a propeller shaft seal, which will require replacement. It would be a good idea to check and see if the bearings have been damaged by the presence of water.
