Question

Their are four wires in the connector. As far as I know, one for ground, one for tail lights, one for left turn, one for right turn.  Thanks, Frank

Question -
Hi Bert, I have a trailer I use for a 17 foot boat. Took it out a couple weeks ago and the lights worked fine. Brought it back at night. When I got up the next a.m. I realized that some one had broken the two side marker lites on the trailer, so I will replace those.  In the meantime, I find out that the trailer lites for stop turn and signal will work when I turn the headlights on. However, I have no turn signals or 4 way flashers at all.  I have checked the wires and can't find anything broken. I have also replaced the two 1157 bulbs. Still not working. Any help ?
Thank You, Frank
Answer -
Frank,
I will need the make and model of your boat trailer. If all the lights including the turn signals worked before the rear lamps were broken, I would say that most likely a problem exists with the trailer plug and connector? or possible a ground connection. As for the connector, how many wires/connections are in the connector?

Answer
Frank,
With most four wire lighting systems the wires are connected as follows, 1 common ground, 1 for tail and running lights, 1 for left turn and stop, 1 for right turn and stop!  An easy way to find out what is wrong is to use a test lamp and with the key on and starting with the left turn signal on, follow the wiring from the connector to the fault/open connection. note, turn and stop lights must work without the head lights on! You can also try turning on the four way flashers and if they are working on your vehicle, all you need to do is to use the test lamp and trace out the flasher circuits, the flasher lamps use the stop lamps in the trailer and on your vehicle!
