trainer career in NZ

2016/7/15 11:20:23

Question
hello sir. i am interested in training racing thoroughbreds in your country NZ. since i am an Indian, can i become a trainer there? do i need to be a citizen of NZ?

Answer
Hi Rohit,
Its a while since I heard from you.
The short answer to your question is, yes, you can train horses in NZ providing you obtain one of three license classes available.
You will be able to find the license criteria from NZ Racing, probably on their website or from their office in Wellington.
I am not sure about residency but you could ask NZ Racing about that as well. I have previously advised you that it would be best to work for an established stable here in NZ until you learn enough about how NZ racing works on a day to day basis, before branching out on your own.
Most racing clubs have boxes and paddocks to lease at their tracks and the NZ Thoroughbred Trainers Association will help you to find work to begin with.
I hope this is a good start for you and I am happy to help you when you finally make the move. There are also several Indian jockeys riding here, in fact Nivesh Teeluck rode my horse a few starts ago.
Regards,
Don Boddie
