Loss of topline in resting racehorse

2016/7/15 11:22:55

Question
What makes a race horse on 3 weeks rest in pasture begin to lose its topline.

Is is lack of carbohydrates in the diet?  Lack of excercise?

Should I increase Lucerne from 2 to 3 biscuits a day.

This horse gets Mitavite Breeder Scoop,  PowerOne 1 cup, and Steam flake barley,   twice a day, plus 2 biscuits of hay.

Answer
hi -- if the horse is loosing his condition while resting on the farm, he may have something wrong with him. usually when they get off the track to the farm and have a nice rest, they pick up and feel like a million dollars and look great. sometimes the geldings run out of the artificial hormones  while racing  at the track and that can make them loose condition. check with your vet to see if he needs hormones.  it sounds like you are giving him a good diet and vitamins.  thanks ED HESS
