training racehorses

Question
Can you recommend any books or videos I can get that will show me how to train racehorses from start to finish? I have an Arabian that I hope to eventually race at Los Alamitos, CA. I need to set him on a schedule, but I'm not sure what I'll need to do.

Answer
Nicole,

Honestly, if you really want your horse to have his best chance at the races, I'd strongly suggest that you hire a trainer, and  then shadow him in order to learn how to train, then go off on your own with the next  one, or the one after that.  Learning a new discipline always involves lots of mistakes, and unfortunately when someone is learning to train on their own, it is the horse who usually pays for those mistakes.  Sometimes with a career or even a life ending injury.
Regardless what you decide to do though, the great trainer Preston Burch has written a very good book on training called Training The Racehorse.  It will give you a good overview of everything, although absolutely nothing substitutes for actual hands on experience.

Good Luck,
