turf conditions

Question

Dear Mr. Hess,
How does the condition of the turf influence the outcome of a race?
Which kind of horses are better on 'firm' and others can deal better with 'soft' ground, and why?
Thank you for your time.
Kind regards
Jens U. Roesner

Answer
hi  i guess it depends on the individual horse and how they handle the turf. some horses love the soft going and other horses love a more firm footing. i always looked at a horses foot and if it was a very flat soled foot then i thought that the horse would make a good turf horse. if the foot was a cupped out foot then i didn't think they would like the turf. hope this helps you. thanks ED HESS
