Re-entry into the game

QUESTION:   I am 50yrs old and have been away for awhile to work with family.  I am considering taking some equine courses in college to enhance my ability to hire on in a decent shed.  Am I wasting my time here?? Or should I just go and make the rounds and explain my experience on the backside that started when I was a teen and covered harness and runners. I know hands on experience is the benchmark, but would the education help?

ANSWER: hi i would just go and make the rounds and explain your past experience and if they need help, you should get a job over a guy with no experience. AFTER ALL you have already worked with horses in the past. i wish you much luck in getting back in the swing of things.  thanks ED HESS

QUESTION:   I suspected that would be the answer, and I thank you. However it seems that in the last several years many of the top trainers i.e. Pletcher have had a background as educated in this field, and this has allowed them the chance to apprentice under the greats, as opposed to grabbing a shank and pitchfork, something we all have already done......Was just wondering if this would be an edge during the initial interview, even if its the usual 1 minute "check back with me".??

hi i do not know of any collage that would have the classes you would need to know what you already know. actual  working with the horses at a farm is much better then a colleague class. i would hire a person with experience over a collage grad anytime. that is my own opinion  thanks ED HESS
