Leg weariness

2016/7/15 11:26:20

Question
We have a 5 year old mare that started racing late . She has won two races both at 5 furlongs. Her first race she won in 103.4 and her second win came after 2 losses and she won that 5 furlong in 102.3. Her first four races was 5 furlongs or less. But we have now stretched her out t0 7 1/2 and six furlongs and she has been showing the speed but getting leg weary in the last 2 furlongs stretch. We exercise her 3 days with one day rest and then go again for another 3 days consecutive . Her exercises are 1 mile jog and 1 mile gallop each day. The gallops are just above the pace of a slow gallop. What type of exercise and how many consecutive days do you recommend. Also do you know of any supplements to go along with exercise that can solve this problem. Both her dam and sire got the mile distance without any problem.

Answer
hi  well she might have a breathing problem. you should have your vet scope her to see if there is anything wrong in her throat. also she might be bleeding when she is under pressure. lots of horses do bleed during a race, and never show the bleeding outwardly. i usually gallop my horses 1 1/2 miles per day 6 days a week with one day off. and if they haven't raced with in a month then i work them 2 days before they race.  the main thing is to see if there is any breathing problem with her. vet check her out  hope this helps  ED HESS
