Horse Death

Question
My 2yr old colt was gored by a longhorn steer on the inside right thigh. My vet told me it passed through the muscle and it should heal nicely, but needless to say my colt passed away due to colic. I know that lack of mobility can cause colic, as well as stress, Would it be safe to say that the injury caused by the longhorn is what killed my horse? Can a horse colic due to the stress and discomfort of a severe injury?

Answer
Hi Coy,
It is difficult to say without knowing what sort of colic it was. However yes, stress can cause the onset of colic. Also if the environment and feed that this horse was getting was suddenly changed it would or could cause colic. To explain: if the horse was taken off all pasture and suddenly feed concentrates confined in a box etc.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
Regards,
Don Boddie
