Training race horses

2016/7/15 11:27:09

Question
Hi, currently studying training race horses at college and would love to know some drills and methods used for training a sprinter and long distant race horse. What would you use to achieve your goals for getting these horses race fit? Would you train on undulated terrain or just use a race track?
Thank you very much for your time and help
Carol

Answer
Hi Carol,
This question is probably better directed to a person currently training horses as the options are as numerous as are the number of horses.
That said, I am in favour of a variety of training methods and terrain. The conditions on a track are seldom the same so give the horse plenty of variety.
Hills build strength and swimming a horse can be useful if they are sore or weak.
I could go on for hours about this subject but it would be much better for you if you spoke with a few trainers and took an overview from thir comments.
Hope this helps,
Don
