Jockey/Exercise Rider... How do I start?

2016/7/15 11:27:19

Question
I have been riding for 3 years, and am enthralled by horse racing. And I want to ride. I want to look into being an exercise rider or jockey. Are there any horse racing stables in Massachusetts, USA? And how do you suggest I get started? And how old do I have to be?

Answer
Hello Medha,

There are tracks in Boston Massachusetts. You need to be at least 16 years old in most jurisdictions to obtain a jockeys' license. I would check training centers where they break babies and start out horses and go from there. Those farms are the best place to start. I would go to a race track in that area and ask around. Most trainers are looking for riders and would be willing to teach.
