reading the performance record

Question
What does it mean when a horse has (performance record)
 5 starts - M -1 -2
What does the "M" refer to?
 Thanks!

Answer
Hi Karen:

The "M" indicates that the horse is a "maiden" and has not won a race.  Usually, the Racing Form would list it as a zero:

   (5  0-1-2)   5 starts, 0 wins, 1 second, 2 thirds

but I guess some past-performance data bases use a letter designation.
