colt management in racing

2016/7/15 11:27:47

Question
QUESTION: I have a very nice 3ye colt who won his first start and i would like to do whatever necessary not to geld him untill
certain. How do I manage him at the moment he is very quite.

ANSWER: Hi Ronelle,
Its always nice and encouraging when a first starter wins, well done.
I think you may have answered your own question by saying he is very quiet.
Usually the reason people geld colts is because they can become hard to handle especially around the track where they come in contact with fillies that may be in season. Caution is always the best recipe and being aware of what will fire him up!
If he shows considerable ability and may be a future breeding prospect then you need to be very careful with him. All the best stallions have a significant racing carrer so plenty of other people have managed their colts. Seek advice from them, they have done it all before.
There are some drugs you can use but I dont recommend that unless there is no other way.
Hope this advice helps and that your 'boy' goes on to be a champion.
Regards,
Don Boddie

QUESTION: thank you Don it is al wish full thinking but it is always
good to be prepared. Do you know of anyone I can contact that has had a similar horses or stallion.
Regards
Ronelle

Answer
Hi Ronelle,
I live on the other side of the world in New Zealand so no I don't know anyone in USA who has had a similar problem. Every studmaster or racing trainer who has colts will be able to help you. Get a list of trainers in your area and start ringing them is the best advice I can give from here.
Good luck,
Don
