Question
QUESTION: Snickers is a rescued thorobred.  He is thin however,  He is 16.2 hands and weighs about 950 #'s His ribs are showing slightly.  He has been wormed, checked by a vet and his teeth floated. I have him up to 2 scoops of feed 3 times a day with 2 flakes of hay a day and a weight maintance additive.  Does this sound right and is ther anything else I should do?  In the morning he foams at the mouth before he eats.  Never seen this in a horse.

ANSWER: hi -- well foaming at the mouth is something that is probably he does when he thinks of his food. if you had a vet check, and his teeth floated ,then a good feeding program will bring him around. i always used to feed corn to my horses as it is a great food to put weight on a horse ,and also a great food for the winter as it is a great heat producer. feeding 3 times a day is very good for the horse. if you can feed the hay off the floor, it would keep the horse from getting dust etc in his lungs. hope this helps you  thanks ED HESS

QUESTION: Thank you for the info.  I am feeding a Dumor Senior Feed.  Should I add corn to it?  Also, the scoop is about 3#'s so I am feeding 18 #'s of feed a day.  This seems like a lot, but I understand thorobred's need more feed than other horses.

Answer
hi -- yes i had some thoroughbreds that i fed 18-20 quarts of grain a day. i would add whole corn to his diet.  there is probably corn in your horse feed already, but probably a small amount .plenty of fresh water and daily exercise is also needed. hope this helps you.  thanks ED HESS
