During race stops

2016/7/15 11:28:51

Question
Hi there. We own a Thoroughbred who during a race always stops at the 1/4 mile pole. We have checked him for bleeding, Flapper problems. and several other things. His Blood is good. The last thing we are thinking that might be wrong is his feet. How do you check his feet for soreness and how can we get him over this problem if his feet are getting sore. He races in Texas and has stopped at the 1/4 pole at 3 tracks. Thanks for your info

Answer
Have you tested his feet with a hoof tester (vet or blacksmith can do this for you) to see if he has sore areas? If so do his feet up with animalintex the night before race, then paint with hoof freeze several times the day of the race. If he does not test sore, it probably is not his feet.

Does he  stop when on the lead, off the pace or both?
Maybe he resents the whip down the stretch. Had one like that and one day the jock lost the whip at the 1/4 pole. Won by five that day , and many times (14) after that until he was claimed.

Another thing that might really help is to put him on Thyro-l powder. Makes goers out of a lot of stoppers.

                                    Good luck
