Question
I have a 2 yr old filly, rather small, but I'd like to see what she can do. I am wondering how I start her, once she's broke to ride, what kind of training program does she need to learn how to race?

Answer
Charlene,

Most trainers are perfectly happy if the horse just knows the basics when he arrives to be trained for the races.  She should know how to stand tied to the wall, pick up her feet for the blacksmith, and lead well.  If she is going to be broke to ride before she goes to the trainer, then she should know how to walk, trot, gallop, back up when asked, and stand quietly.  She should be willing to travel into the bit without trying to avoid it.  Racehorses tend to run into the bit more than riding horses, so she should be taught to accept a certain constant light pressure with slinging her head around, or trying to stop or back up in order to get away from the bit.

Good luck with your filly!
