SWIMMING 2 YR OLDS

Question
DON, I HAVE A 2YR OLD FILLY, 3/31/06 FOAL.  DO YOU THINK
SWIMMING HER INTO 3/8TH's SHAPE IS BETTER THAN JUST WORKING
HER INTO SHAPE ON A SAND/DIRT TRACK. I HAVE HEARD THAT SWIMMING 2YR OLDS MAY LEAD TO STIFLE OR BACK PROBLEMS LATER ON. APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTS.
KURT

Answer
Hi Kurt,
I am sorry that you have not received an answer from me before now. I answered your mail but have just discovered several emails stuck in the outbox.

As you are no doubt aware working a 2yr old is a delicate business. They are usually quite weak and any pressure can result in anomalies which can manifest themselves at a later date.
Swimming is good but start slowly as often a youngster will over do the swimming action. It will have the same effect as over racing and lead to pulled muscles and tendon strains, particularly in the back and lower legs.
In New Zealand we often start youngsters on the sand or soft going off a lead rope. You can put in quite a lot of work before you add weight. Its just another way of reducing risk in training.
Swimming in pools (plunge rings) is becoming more popular although trainers close to beaches, lakes or rivers have always recognized the benefits of adding this environment into the training schedule.

It has always been popular for jumpers especially those which are injured.

I hope this helps although I am not a specialist in this are. My knowledge is more of a general nature and what is accepted practice in NZ.
Good luck,
Regards,
Don Boddie
